Why I make to order

I don’t keep a shelf of finished pieces. Everything I make, I make for you — after you’ve ordered it, cut from leather I’ve chosen for that specific piece, stitched and finished by hand.

That’s not a policy. It’s just how handmade works.

 

It’s just me in the workshop

I cut every piece, stitch every seam, finish every edge myself. There’s no production line, no batch run, no one else. That means the attention I give each piece is undivided — but it also means there’s a natural limit to how much I can make at once.

Making to order is the honest response to that. Nothing is rushed to fill a shelf. Nothing sits waiting for the right buyer. I make your piece when you need it — and not before.

 

Every piece starts with a conversation

Looking at recent orders, almost every single one has been customised in some way. A customer who wants a wallet but in a specific colour. Someone who has a shape in mind for a keychain fob. Another who knows they want a cardholder but isn’t sure how many slots, or whether they’d prefer it with a cash pocket.

That back-and-forth — the questions, the references, the working out of details — is part of the process. It takes time. But it’s also how I make sure the piece I hand-stitch is the one you actually wanted, not just the closest thing I had in stock.

No two orders look quite the same. That’s not by accident.

 

The leather tells me where to cut

Full-grain leather isn’t uniform. Every hide has its own character — slight variation in texture, tone, the way the grain sits. When I’m making a single piece for you, I can choose the right section of hide for that piece. The part of the hide that suits a wallet isn’t the same as what suits a notebook cover.

If I were making batches to stock a shelf, I’d have to work around that variation rather than with it. Making to order means the leather leads. I think that shows in the finished piece.

 

What it means for you

Lead time is usually one to two weeks — sometimes a little more when a piece needs extra back-and-forth to get the details right. Worth keeping in mind if you’re ordering a gift. But it also means your piece hasn’t been handled, stored, or sitting on a shelf somewhere. It arrives fresh, made specifically for you.
